In the fall of 2008, Kirk Pedersen had already established himself as one of the most influential Physical Education teachers in the state of Michigan. He earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Eastern Michigan University. He was a recipient of the Innovator of the Year Award and Physical Education Teacher of the Year for the state of Michigan. In addition, Kirk had just finished up a three year term as the Vice President of Physical Education for the profession’s state organization, MAHPERD.
On October 25, 2008 Kirk’s life came to a crashing halt. His tree stand collapsed while hunting, leaving him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Kirk would endure seven months of hospitalization at three different hospitals. His goal was full recovery and a return to teaching in the field that he was so passionate. Despite continued rehabilitation and determination his recovery resulted in a fashion that did not allow him to return to teaching in the classroom. The website www.symbolofstrength.com chronicles Kirk’s life and his battle to recover from a devastating injury. Despite this major setback, he continues to advance and promote health and fitness through his contribution to this website.
Brett taught health and physical education for 9 years before taking on his current charge as a middle school assistant principal. He currently holds a group fitness certification with the American Council on Exercise. Along with Kirk, he also served on the MAHPERD board of directors as the Vice President for Health Education. He is an active legislative advocate for health and physical education at the local, state, and national levels. He currently leads a wellness program for his school district and teaches fitness classes at the Chelsea Wellness Center. His most recent pursuit has been moving into a leadership position with the Dexter Wellness Coalition, a non-profit group dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles in his community.
